6 Ways to Avoid Computer Eyestrain

Sore, dry, tired eyes: These are symptoms emblematic of computer eyestrain. Computer vision syndrome (CVS) affects up to 90 percent of office workers, resulting in blurred or double vision; itchy, red eyes; headaches; and neck and shoulder pain. While escaping the screen isn’t an option for most employees, several solutions exist for soothing eye pain. Protect your eyes and experience relief with Stand Up Desk Store’s six simple tips for avoiding computer eyestrain.

1. Visit your optometrist.

If you don’t get your eyes checked yearly, you should. Because the rest of our advice won’t make a difference if you’re not wearing the right prescription. Notice yourself squinting to decipher the text on your screen? Invest in a pair of glasses or contact lenses designed for computer work. Reading glasses work well for print, not computers—so save those frames for other pursuits.

2. Readjust your computer screen.

An ergonomically correct computer workstation (available from the Stand Up Desk Store) is essential to avoid eyestrain. Reposition your screen so that it’s 15 to 30 inches away, eyes level with the top of your monitor. If your eyes continue to hurt, enlarge your text using the keyboard shortcut (ctrl + “+”) to make reading more comfortable. Always adjust your screen rather than scooting closer to it—this will only do more damage.

3. Use proper lighting and reduce glare.

The lighting in your office—whether too much or too little—makes a huge difference to how well you see. And your screen’s brightness matters too. To determine if adjusting your monitor’s brightness or contrast will help, cup your hands over your eyes like a visor. If your eyes feel better, change the lighting. You can also purchase a glare hood  or a monitor cover to reduce computer glare.

4. Step away from your screen.

Taking a break from your desk isn’t just good for your health; it’s good for your eyes as well. Go on a walk around the parking lot or your office building, letting your eye muscles relax and refocus. If stepping away from work isn’t an option, print your documents and read them offline.

5. Remember to blink.

Staring intently at your screen can lead to dry eye—the result of insufficient lubrication from your tear glands. To prevent this issue, blink frequently and run a humidifier to keep moisture in the air. People who suffer from chronic dry eye may require artificial tears, so see your doctor if this is a problem.

6. Pamper your eyes.

Your eyes are one of the hardest working organs in your body—so give them the special treatment. Massage your temples, brow, and cheekbones to stimulate your tear glands and relieve dry eye. Once you get home from the office, place chilled cucumber slices or tea bags on your eyelids to reduce inflammation and swelling.
