5 Fun Hacks for Bosses to Help Boost Workplace Wellness

If you’re concerned about employee wellness, it probably drives you nuts seeing your employees glued to their chairs for hours on end.

Fortunately, well-conceived corporate wellness programs will include measures to foster healthy movement and exercise. But what if you run a small business and lack budget (and/or bandwidth) to implement full-scale wellness programs at work? Or what if you work for a large business and want to augment your existing workplace wellness initiatives? In these instances, it helps to have a trick or two up your sleeve.

One trick is to organize activities and challenges that encourage physical activity. To get the results you’re after, these activities should be:

  • Fun
  • Not overly complicated
  • Have a low barrier to entry so practically everyone can join in regardless of fitness level
  • Come with an incentive to participate

To arm you with some fresh ideas, here’s our top five ideas to get employees out of their chairs and moving around.

Tricks to Help Foster Worksite Wellness

1. The “No Instant Message” Challenge

When an employee has a quick question for a coworker, it’s always tempting to send an instant message, write an email, or pick up the phone. To combat this, create a contest or challenge that incentivizes employees to instead walk over to their coworkers’ desks and ask the question in person.

Possibilities could include a point system where an employee earns a point for visiting in person and/or loses a point for calling or sending a message. The employee who accumulates the most points over a set period of time can win a gift card or other reasonably-priced prize.

2. The Coffee Run Incentive

If there’s a popular coffee shop within a reasonable distance of the office, create incentives for your team to walk to it. One idea could be hosting occasional meetings there and buying coffee for everyone who walks to the meeting. Another could be offering to buy coffee for whomever volunteers to do the morning “coffee run” for the team…provided, of course, the person gets there by human power (and not in a car).

3. The Steps Contest

With the advent of wearable technology, practically everyone nowadays has access to fitness tracking. Put it to good use by holding competitions to see who can accumulate the most steps. Another option is to challenge everyone on the team to work in their daily 10,000 steps and offer a prize to the whole group (perhaps a half day off or a lunch) if everyone in the group hits their goals. For the employees who don’t own a smart watch or other device, purchase some low-cost pedometers for them to use.

4. Host Quick Meetings in Locations Without Chairs

Instead of having your daily or weekly team huddle in a conference room, pick a spot that requires people to stand. Depending on the type of business you run, this could be a corner of the warehouse, a hallway, a supply room, by the photocopier, etc. Placing a rolling whiteboard in the spot can help designate it as a meeting space…and offer a tool to aid in collaboration and presentations.

5. Install Standing Desks

The growing popularity of standing desks in the workplace is no accident. With each passing year, an increasing number of companies across the country report more active, focused, and energetic employees…all thanks to the addition of work stations that allow people to stand while they work.

We hope these hacks make for a worthy addition to your employee wellness programs!
