Team SUDS Donates Standing Desk Converter to a Disabled Veteran

October 5, 2018 - Sitting for extended periods of time can cause back and neck pain for just about anyone. But imagine the pain suffered by a veteran injured in active duty.

Such is the case of 26-year-old Travis Roberts, a six-year veteran of the U.S. Army. During his tour, Roberts was severely injured, breaking his back in two places, fracturing his left hip, and also enduring extensive damage to his right knee. Because of his injuries, Roberts was forced to undergo two reconstructive hip surgeries and his right knee has little-to-no cartilage.

Due to continued back and hip issues, Roberts was honorably discharged from his full time Active Army and Army Reserve positions and is now considered a disabled veteran.

Since his discharge, Roberts has gone back to school, with the goal to obtain a bachelor’s degree in science and medicine.

“I am trying to further my education in school to continue staying a productive member to society without having such a physically demanding job,” Roberts said.

Unfortunately, the injuries that keep Roberts off the battlefield make it equally challenging to study.

“It is truly heartbreaking watching your 26-year-old son hide the tears in his eyes from the pain, but then say ‘It's okay Mom. It’s just one more hour. I can get the assignment done. I got this’,” said Robert’s mother, Kelly. “So then he had to sit at a computer daily with an awkward back brace, to complete countless hours of reports, assignments, and online classes.”

To help provide some relief, Stand Up Desk Store donated a Power Pro Electric Adjustable Standing Desk Converter, which helps Roberts alleviate pain by alternating between sitting and standing. The push button operation allows Roberts to raise and lower heavier items like monitors and his keyboard without placing stress on his back.

“(There’s) an overwhelming sense of relief, just knowing that this lift desk you have so generously provided, is going to help him ways you may not be able to imagine,” Kelly said.

“Being able to comfortably accomplish my work while in a position of comfort is so exciting and such a needed change of pace,” Travis said. “I was also informed that you also donated similar desks to my local police department for the officers to utilize (which they do, and love!). I understand it's a multi-party benefit with the donations but it's still extremely respectable and charitable. It's people and organizations like yours that make me and so many others proud to have raised our hand and sworn oath.”
