Team SUDS “Chips In” at North Suburban YMCA
May 23, 2018 - With summer activities around the corner, the North Suburban YMCA in Northbrook, Illinois was badly in need of fresh wood chips for their playground.
In addition to providing the facility's youngest paid members a place to play, the playground is central to the NSYMCA's mission of making "...Y programs accessible to families in financial need, including after-school childcare, summer camp, life-changing swim lessons, special needs programs, and memberships."
Stand Up Desk Store’s staff “chipped in” by taking time out of their work day to ensure the facility offered a new, safe playing surface.
“It was a good thing we were able to help out that day,” said Jessica Stam, E-commerce Coordinator.
According to Stam, children from the community were eager to use the playground. Short on resources, the YMCA had only one worker available to mulch the entire playground.
“It was insanely hot that day, and there was no way one person was going to get the job done,” Stam said.
Springing into action, Stam, SUDS E-commerce Product Manager Elesha Garza, E-commerce Assistant Becky Behof, and Product Manager David Ellis each grabbed a shovel and a wheelbarrow then started chipping away at the huge pile of wood chips. By day’s end, area youngsters had a freshly mulched playground to enjoy.
“It was hard work, and we were all sore the next day, but we know lots of kids and pare
nts appreciated the effort,” Stam said.
