How Standing Desks Can Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

Now that it’s the new year, a lot of people are putting down the snacks, hitting the gym, reading self-help books, and otherwise gearing up to fulfill their new year’s resolutions.

Whether your new year’s resolution list in includes goals for fitness, success, or overall health and wellbeing, you’ll be happy to know that using a standing desk can help.

Want to know how? Here’s our top 3 examples:

Standing Desks: Keeping Your Best New Year’s Resolutions

1. Career Success

Whether gunning for a promotion, a raise, or an award, achieving career success is one of the more common new year’s resolutions.

While it’s challenging to scientifically identify a direct link between standing desks and professional success, Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center School of Public Health found a way to do exactly that.

As reported in The Washington Post, the university conducted a study which monitored 167 employees in a Texas call center over a six-month period. The call center proved to be an excellent test subject, since “success” could be directly measured in terms of production over time. Specifically, this meant successful phone calls per hour.

According to the article, the study found that “…employees using stand-capable desks were more productive than their colleagues in standard, seated desks. And the productivity of the standing-desk workers continued to increase over their seated colleagues steadily over time. In the first month, the stand-capable group had 23 percent more successful calls than their seated colleagues, and by the sixth month, they had 53 percent more successful calls.”

While these results may or may not translate to your specific occupation, there’s a strong chance that standing while you work could make achieving your success goals a little bit easier.

2. Weight Loss

In early 2018, Mayo Clinic researchers aggregated the results of more than 700 studies that measured the benefits of standing desks.

The raw numbers comparing static standing versus sitting are not jaw dropping (about 54 more calories burned over a 6-hour period). Experts believe in practical use, however, standing desks may actually contribute to weight loss, or at least help prevent weight gain.

As Global News reported, Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Professor Francisco Lopez-Jimenez said “Our results might be an underestimate because when people stand they tend to make spontaneous movements like shifting weight or swaying from one foot to another, taking small steps forward and back. People may even be more likely to walk to the filing cabinet or trash bin.”

Lopez-Jimenez added that “Standing not only burns more calories, the additional muscle activity is linked to lower rates of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes, so the benefits of standing could go beyond weight control.”

3. Improved Health and Wellbeing

An article published by the Harvard University Medical School stated that “Advocates of standing desks point to studies showing that after a meal, blood sugar levels return to normal faster on days a person spends more time standing. And standing, rather than sitting, may reduce the risk of shoulder and back pain.”

The article goes on to suggest that standing while you work can help you improve health and wellbeing simply by eliminating health risks that are proven to be linked to sitting. These, the article states, can include obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer (particularly cancers of the colon or breast), and premature death.

So there you have it! If you’re looking to stick to your New Year’s Resolutions, a standing desk can help you achieve your goals!
