5 Signs You’re Suffering from “Sitting Disease”

Do you sit at a desk for six or more hours per day? When you return home, do you watch two or more hours of television from your couch? If so, you may be suffering from “sitting disease.” For more than 15 years, Dr. James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, has researched the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and concluded that long periods of inactivity are detrimental to our health, with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer among its many dangers. What are the symptoms of “sitting disease”? And what can you do to reverse its effects? With a standing desk and a few helpful hints, you can arm yourself against “sitting disease” and live a better, healthier life.

  1. Poor Posture

Your body is shaped by your daily activities. So if the majority of your day is spent sitting, slumped over a computer keyboard, your musculoskeletal system will conform to this position. Sitting in an office chair causes your neck and shoulders to lean forward—so it’s no wonder they feel sore after hours of inadequate lumbar support. Furthermore, sitting causes the pelvis to rotate backwards, putting pressure on the lumbar discs. With an adjustable stand up desk, you can set your desk at the perfect height to avoid straining your neck and shoulders. (For a guide to better posture, see our infographic.)

  1. Back and Spinal Injuries

“Use it or lose it” doesn’t just apply to muscular strength and exercise. It’s also affected by your everyday activity. If sedentary for long periods of time, your spine weakens and the muscle (called the psoas) that runs along the lumbar region tightens, increasing your risk for herniated lumbar disks. Spine health requires movement, so that the soft disks between vertebrae expand and contract, soaking up blood and nutrients. When inactive, disks become brittle, dehydrated, and inflexible as collagen hardens around supporting tendons and ligaments. At a stand up desk, you’re more likely to move, fidget, and walk around—necessary activities for back and spinal health.

  1. Weight Gain and a Slower Metabolism

You burn 50 more calories per hour standing versus sitting, adding up to a total of 400 more calories burned per day and 2,000 more calories burned per work week. When you stand, your abdominal muscles work to keep you upright, increasing their strength and slimming your waistline. Prolonged sitting, however, slows your metabolism as decreased muscle contractions act less quickly to remove fat from the blood stream. As insulin’s effect begins to weaken and your weight increases, the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer increases as well.

  1. Chronic Fatigue

Feeling sleepy, drained, and unfocused at work? It may be the result of “sitting disease.” Sitting for long periods of time causes energy levels to plummet as blood flow decreases. Blood sugar levels also increase (also called hyperglycemia) when inactive, which can cause chronic fatigue, especially in diabetics. But at a standing desk, your movement increases circulation and stabilizes blood sugar levels so you gain the clarity, vigor, and productivity you need to be successful at work.

  1. Repetitive Use Injuries

Suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, or bursitis? For most office workers, these repetitive motion injuries are the result of long hours spent fixed in one position. A mild aching turns into severe pain or numbness, and may signal the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. With an ergonomic standing desk you can adjust the workstation’s height, so your hands, wrists, and elbows rest at the appropriate level to avoid repetitive use injuries.
